1. Save Me - Remy Zero
Smallville's theme song. I don't think this needs further explanation.
2. Sunshine Superman - The Films (original by Donovan)
Sunshine came softly through my a-window today
Could've tripped out easy a-but I've a-changed my ways
It'll take time, I know it but in a while
You're gonna be mine, I know it, we'll do it in style
A fun, kind of sexy, very upbeat song setting the mood for the state of the Lane-Kent-Sullivan household at the beginning of the story. They're used to each other now and the idea of being a family. Generally, they're quite happy. (dundunDUUUUUUN)
3. Fucking Boyfriend - The Bird and the Bee
Are you working up to something? But you give me almost nothing.
Keep me helpless up to something on my knees.
Would you ever be my, would you be my f-cking boyfriend?
Conner, Conner, Conner. Like Clark, girls (and guys) fall in love quite easily with Conner. Unlike Clark, he knows it. ;) I really wanted to set Conn up as a good guy in general but he's definitely got his asshole moments. This is one of them.
4. When I'm Sixty-Four - The Beatles
When I get older losing my hair,
Many years from now,
Will you still be sending me a valentine
Birthday greetings bottle of wine?
In the beginning of this fic, Lois and Clark are 39 and 37 respectively. By the end, they're 41 and 39. They've know each other since they were 19 and 17; that's 20 years they've been together not necessarily as a couple, but still... This song extends the theme of from Sunshine Superman of fun, comfortable, love-filled teasing.
5. Don't You Know Who I Think I Am - Fall Out Boy
They say quitters never win
But we walk the plank on a sinking ship
There's a world outside of my front door
That gets off on being down
I consider this the Young Justice theme song. You have no idea how much I enjoyed translating YJ into Smallville, no matter how brief their cameos. There's a whole STORY about Ollie Queen and his convoluted family that will never see the light of day (I think). SV!YJ continues the tradition of SV!JL being more than a bunch of people working together. They're friends and family, especially for the 2nd gen heroes.
6. Songbird - Eva Cassidy (original by Fleetwood Mac)
For you there'll be no crying. For you the sun will be shining
‘Cause I feel that when I'm with you, it's alright, I know it's right
And the songbirds keep singing like they know the score
And I love you, I love you, I love you like never before
This song marks the first heartbreak in the story: Lois' first miscarriage. In my fanon, Lois is actually a pretty good singer but she only does it seriously around people she trusts.
7. My Hero - Foo Fighters
There goes my hero
Watch him as he goes
There goes my hero
This is Conn's song for both Clark and Bruce. As much as he hero-worships Batman for the bad-assness, deep down inside, he wants to be just like his dad. He'd never admit that though. Because his dad is SO not cool and/or badass.
8. Superman - Five for Fighting
It may sound absurd but don't be naive
Even Heroes have the right to bleed
I may be disturbed but won't you conceed
Even Heroes have the right to dream
I know every fanmix and its donkey has this but Five for Fighting really caught at the heart of Superman in this song. In this story especially when Clark is once again faced with how NOT-human he is no matter how simply human his desires, this song is especially relevant.
9. Holding Out For a Hero - Frou Frou ft. David Bowie (original by Bonnie Tyler)
I need a hero
I'm holding out for a hero 'til the end of the night
He's gotta be strong and he's gotta be fast and he's gotta be fresh from the fight
I need a hero
I'm holding out for a hero 'til the morning light
He's gotta be sure and it's gotta be soon and he's gotta be larger than life
Even though the song is full of "he's," this is the JL theme song, especially the Originals. It refers not only to how they save everyone but also how the Originals support each other in their private/civvie lives.
10. Spark - Tori Amos
She's convinced she could hold back a glacier
But she couldn't keep Baby alive
Doubting if there's a woman in there somewhere
This is for Lois' second miscarriage.
11. Running Up That Hill - Placebo (original by Kate Bush)
And if I only could,
Make a deal with God,
Get him to swap our places,
Be running up that road,
Be running up that hill,
Be running up that building.
If I only could
And Clark's response to #10.
12. Peace - Apocalyptica
Had to have some fight music in there somewhere. There aren't a lot of action scenes but this is for all (one?) of them.
13. Father and Son - Ronan Keating ft. Yusef Islam (original by Yusef Islam AKA Cat Stevens)
Father: I was once like you are now, and I know that it's not easy,
To be calm when you've found something going on.
But take your time, think a lot,
Why, think of everything you've got.
For you will still be here tomorrow, but your dreams may not.
Son: How can I try to explain, when I do he turns away again.
It's always been the same, same old story.
From the moment I could talk I was ordered to listen.
Now there's a way and I know that I have to go away.
I know I have to go.
Clark and Conner look like and have similar core values but in all other ways, they're completely different. Additionally, Conner didn't come into the family until he was a teenager, throwing Clark into the role of father without any preparation. This causes a LOT of head-butting. There's this constant push-cling from both parties; both wanted the idea of each other so much for so long but, having gotten what they wanted, they're still clumsy about the relationship. OH THEM!
14. The Way That I Am - Ingrid Michaelson
If you were falling, then I would catch you.
You need a light, I'd find a match.
Cause I love the way you say good morning.
And you take me the way I am.
Cute, sweet and simple, this can stand for the established romantic relationship, Clark and Lois. I really wanted to show how much Lois adored Clark; too often outside of SV, she's seen as a bit of a harpy. She's definitely rough around the edges but she will go to hell, freeze it, and come back for Clark. Just like Clark would for her. It also stands for the growing friendship between Tim and Conn.
15. Closer - Better Than Ezra
And the morning light was breaking
Slowly moving across the bed
He gets up without her waking
To the voices in his head
Through the shadows in the hallway
To the room they painted blue
And on the inside he is frightened
At a loss for what to do
Until he opens up his eyes
And the angels all look down
Clark's voice again, representative of that last pregnancy.
16. You Are My Sunshine - Elizabeth Mitchell (original by Jimmie Davis and Charles Mitchell [sort of])
You are my sunshine, my only sunshine
You make me happy when skies are gray
You'll never know dear, how much I love you
Please don't take my sunshine away
Closing the fanmix is this loverly folksong. I wrote the whole fic from the final scene where Lois is on the delivery OR singing this song to her two boys. The story started joyful and it ends in the same manner.
